The federal judge overseeing the prosecution of former President Donald J. Trump on charges of illegally storing a trove of classified documents set a trial date for Friday in May 2024, striking a middle ground between the government’s request to go to trial in December and Mr.
In her order, Judge Aileen M. Cannon said the case will be held in a local court in Fort Pierce, Fla., a coastal city two and a half hours north of Miami that will draw a jury pool from several counties where Mr.
Judge Cannon also set a calendar of hearings, for the remainder of this year and into next year, including those relating to the handling of classified material at the heart of the case.
The processing order came after a hearing Tuesday in Fort Pierce County Court where prosecutors working for the special counsel, Jack Smith, and attorneys for Mr.
The timing of the process is more important in this case than in many criminal matters because Mr. Trump is now the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination and his legal commitments to the court will overlap with his campaign schedule.
Well, the date Judge Cannon chose to start the trial – May 20, 2024 – is one day before the Georgia state primary. But it falls after most of the first race is done.
