CHELSEA, Maine (AP) – A Maine police detective shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at law enforcement officers as they tried to locate and arrest him over the weekend, officials said.

Members of the Maine State Police Task Force were searching for Frank Foss Jr., 28, and served a search warrant at a home in Chelsea Township on Sunday. They are accompanied by a crisis counsellor.

Authorities stopped Foss in a wooded area near the home, and he was killed when he pointed a gun at a task force member, said Shannon Moss, a spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Foss was shot by Maine State Police Det. Scott Duff, who has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation, Moss said. The statement did not provide details on how many shots were fired or if Foss pointed the gun at Duff or another member of law enforcement.

Foss was wanted for unlawful possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and violated the terms of his parole, Moss said. The arrest warrant came after an incident earlier this month.
